Mercury Rev :: Something for Joey

originally released in 1993

Finally again the nights are warm and still. Some nights Cort and I will inevitably ride our bikes half-drunk down Damen, on our way home from some $5 movie, or a friendly back porch, or, perhaps, a show at the Bottle.

Everything that was kicked up by to-and-fro’ers, ourselves, awesome peelouts, ballgames, and street vendors during the day settles; the air instead holds pollens, and that shit they dump in the river to make it smell like cinnamon. Which, by the way, I hope is cinnamon. Which, by the way, I kinda like.

Of course, we’ll cut over to Ravenswood. That street is ours! No traffic. We can go against the one-way or make figure 8s. Sometimes I’ll close my eyes and try to count to five. Once I counted to forty-two. But I opened my eyes at, like, two-and-a-half.

Soon we’ll find home, hardly having seen any cars, lock-up our bikes and hit the sack.

great song, it’s weird how mercury rev changed their style. i saw them back in the day when this record came out, not knowing who they were, and i remember thinking they were too much for me to deal with. then i saw them years later and they had this ethereal pop sense with keyboard strings and this british looking dude with a beautiful voice. the older records have all the flaming lips influence that i was looking for to connect Jonathan Donahue (the crossover member betwixt flaming lips and mercury rev) to my favorite mercury rev record deserter’s songs.

Along the lines of too much to deal with, YouTube has the Something for Joey video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiwNhizdwT8), which features naked ladies with stars for boobs, Ron Jeremy, mannequin people, mannequin people on fire, lo-fi green-screen video tricks, outer space, a mosh/writhing pit, a mostly naked guy in sunglasses who’s awful at dancing, a spaceship, various heavenly explosions, and a butt.

Wow, I’d never seen the video for that song before. Thanks for tacking it on. I really love that song and was just thinking the other day that I liked them so much more then (matter of personal taste, I don’t think they’re horrible now, I just like the Flaming Lips-ish stuff a lot more). I’ve always loved "Downs are Feminine Balloons" from that album as well.

I’m with you Hiram. I love this album, and Yerself Is Steam much more than the others. I tend to think of Boces as Mercury Rev’s forgotten record. It seems like folks tend to clamor mostly about Deserter’s Songs, or All Is Dream, or even Yerself Is Steam.

I gotta say I think "Downs" is great too. Along with Bronx Cheer and Meth of a Rockette’s Kick.
