The Sound :: Missiles

originally released in 1980

The saddest part of Adrian Borland’s story was the end. But perhaps the voices finally stopped.

I was introduced to Borland’s music with The Sound a couple of years back by a dear friend and I haven’t stopped listening. I can hear the trouble. I can hear the overwhelming concern. I can hear anxiety build. No, it’s not from the lyrics. It’s from his voice. It’s all right there. Post-punk has never sounded so good. Personal angst has officially turned to real worry and social concern. It all happens right here. This timeless piece will never die and neither will Borland’s desperate apprehension.

In 1999, Adrian Borland threw himself under a train.

They’ve got the money.
They’ve got the know-how.
It’s all above our heads;
It’s coming down now

Somehow this song makes me happy. I don’t think that was ever it’s intent but I can’t change that. That’s the one thing I don’t want to change.

Holy crow, this is an amazing song and a heartbreaking story. I’m struck by how much the Sound sounds like the Constantines, just 20 years early. And how the seemingly simple chorus reaches toward a truly deep and dark moral place…

One of my all-time favorites…the energy contained always smacks right into me. thanks for posting it. who the hell DOES make those missiles when they know what they can do?

you can thank the mighty karl meier for blessing me with this
band. glad i could pass ‘em along to you. the strangest thing about their "sound" (to me, anyway) is that it made me nostalgic at first listen. it was like i was hearing some band that i used to love in high school after not having heard them in a decade. i felt instantly familiar with no real context for my familiarity. same thing happened when karl introduced me to comsat angels.

fucking great song. goosebumps every time. i’ll never understand why these guys weren’t a huge hit. oh, wait…it’s because we live in a culture that rewards mediocrity…duh!

thank you so much for posting this precious song of The Sound … thank you very much… i appreciate it so much …its one of the best expressions i ever heard … way ahead of its time… just like Adrian Borland this song wasn’t grasped or understood by anyone back then … because its way, way, way ahead of its time my friends … and its coming way too deep from Adrian’s soul. Bullet the Blue Sky is good but this one is better and way ahead of time…the shear raw power moved me!
