the National :: Lit Up

originally released in 2005

I just bought a plane ticket to New York City. This is my first vacation in many, many years. If I had an iPod I would be listening to this song upon my arrival. And if I were listening to this song and if someone were to snap a digital picture of me and if they were to apply some basic photoshop techniques, I would resemble an iPod billboard as I jammed my silhouetted way down the LaGuardia terminal. You know why? ‘Cause it is summer 2008 kid, the summer of my rebirth and two of my good friends are getting married in Brooklyn.

Rachel Ries :: Hands to Water

originally released in 2007

Up all night again, up to no good again, thought I could shake this life by now, yeah not so much. Got in the game cause I read Rolling Stone once, it stuck, perpetual need to create can be such a bad habit. It can lead one to strange and beautiful and often dangerous places. My favorite unlit alleys that remain frozen in the 70s somehow. I have been doing some walking lately, the family dog 18 yrs young, my puppy Dizzy got put down recently, no sweeter life-form hath existed. This song is the best lament I know, I have been listening to it over and over and can also play it on the piano.

Dead Milkmen :: Plum Dumb

originally released in 1985

If I have ever really fallen in love, it was in early fall, amongst sticky fruit flavored lip gloss. The blue raspberry preteen lipstick of a girl who had the same poster in her room that I did. She had tried sewing; I had tried chew. Years went by. I got into acid; she got into makin’ babies for other guys. We were just like celebrities.

Or maybe, we lived the lives celebrities wished they could live. She got away w/ more leopard print. We’d peel out under the street lights just as they turn on. Drive to Taco Bell, drive to Dairy Queen, drive to the quarry, swim, eat, smoke Swisher Sweets. Blast Elvis on the car stereo of the Pontiac with the doors open as the sun disappeared behind the purple rocky mountains. Etc.
